Meet Philip Smith
A native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Philip enlisted in 1990 in the Marine Corps Reserves. He spent the next four years serving in the Reserves while enrolled at the University of Rhode Island. Upon graduation from the University and subsequent Officer training, he was commissioned as a 2ndLt in the Marine Corps in May 1995. Upon successful completion of Flight School and the Fleet Replacement Squadron, he joined his first operational “fleet” squadron, HMM-268 the “Red Dragons”.
After four years as a pilot in this squadron and as a fully qualified helicopter aircraft commander and flight leader, Philip volunteered for a “ground tour” and joined 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines as a company Forward Air Controller (FAC) in July of 2002. He deployed with the Battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jan 03 until Sep 03. His primary duties included Company FAC, Combined Anti-Armor Team FAC, Air Officer, Explosive Ordnance (EOD) officer, Coalition Liaison Officer and Assistant Operation Officer.
After this ground combat tour, Philip received orders to Naval Air Station Pensacola where he served as a Flight Instructor with VT-10 as well as an Aerodynamics Instructor with the Naval Aviation Schools Command. Of note, during this tour and at the time a Captain, he received various awards to include the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) Instructor of the Year Award for 2004. However, during this tour the greatest “accomplishment” that occurred was that Philip met and married his wife, Karin Smith – Broker/Owner of Smith Realty Group, whom would go on to support Philip during the rest of his career in the Marines.
Newly promoted to Major, Philip soon received orders to join HMM-364, the “Purple Foxes” out of Camp Pendleton CA for his next combat deployment to Iraq. Serving with the Purple Foxes, Philip served as an Assault Flight Leader, Weapons and Tactics Instructor, Air Mission Commander, Director of Safety and Standardization, Aircraft Maintenance Officer, and briefly as the Executive Officer. He deployed twice with the Purple Foxes in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom flying Combat Medical Evacuations and general support missions.
Between deployments, Philip and Karin made the decision to purchase a Slidell waterfront home in anticipation of being able to return once complete with the tours with the Purple Foxes. It was during Phil’s last deployment, that Karin was able to return to her home state of Louisiana and begin her career as a real estate professional. Soon, after his last tour in Iraq, Philip took orders to New Orleans to rejoin his wife in their beautiful Slidell waterfront home.
He would eventually retire at the rank of LtCol after serving with the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing headquarters as the Deputy of Operations. At the conclusion of his service in the Marine Corps, he had accumulated over 700 combat hours in assault support helicopters and was decorated with 9 Air Medals, the combat action ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with combat “V” and two Meritorious Service Medals.
As a retired Marine, Philip has joined Karin as an agent with her successful real estate brokerage, Smith Realty Group, where they will both proudly continue to serve you!
